How Far Ahead Should You Book Movers, Totes and Everything Else?

The quick answer
Book first, at 6–8 weeks: movers or a truck, and your internet.
Book at 3–4 weeks: totes or boxes, storage, cleaners, elevators.
Book at 1–2 weeks: utility start dates, time off work, help.
Anything at month-end or in summer, add two weeks to all of it.
Internet: 2–4 weeks, sometimes more
Almost always the longest lead time, and the one people leave latest.
Installation appointments routinely run two to four weeks out, and worse at month-end when a large share of your new neighbourhood is also moving. New builds and rural addresses can take longer still.
If you work from home, this isn't an inconvenience — it's an income problem. Treat it as the first call you make.
Rural addresses in Springwater, Oro-Medonte, Innisfil and the surrounding townships:check what's actually available at that address before you commit to the property, not just how long installation takes. Options thin out quickly outside town boundaries.
Movers: 4–8 weeks, more in peak season
Good moving companies fill their calendars weeks ahead, and month-end dates go firstbecause that's when most leases and closings land.
Peak season is May through September, with the last weekend of each month the hardest to book anywhere.
Off-season — November through March — you'll find far more availability, often at better rates.
Book as soon as you have a firm date. If your date might shift, ask about their change policy rather than waiting for certainty.
Truck rental: 3–4 weeks
More flexible than movers, but the same month-end squeeze applies. Larger trucks go first.
Tote or box rental: 2–4 weeks
Enough notice to have them delivered before you want to start packing — which should be two to three weeks before moving day, not the week of.
Work out roughly how many you need first; how much stuff you actually have has a room-by-room method.
Service elevator: 1 week minimum, ideally 4–6
If either end of your move is a condo or apartment building, this is the least flexible thing in your entire move.
Most buildings require 48–72 hours' notice as a minimum. Many want a week. Some want two to four.
Book it as soon as you have a date, and build everything else around it — movers, truck, help. The elevator won't move for you.
Also needed, often 48–72 hours ahead: a certificate of insurance from your movers, typically $2 million with the property manager named. Without it on file, your crew can be refused entry.

Storage: 2–4 weeks
Whether it's a unit or totes for a project, book early enough to be certain — particularly if you have a closing-date gap, where the dates are fixed and you have no flexibility.
Cleaners: 2–3 weeks
For the old place, the new one, or both. Month-end books up.
Snow clearing and snow tires: book in October
Not moving-specific, but it belongs on this list because it's the most repeated local advice there is.
Plow contractors fill their routes by October. Tire appointments vanish after the first storm and don't reappear for about three weeks.
Utilities: 2–3 weeks
Hydro, gas and water need less notice than internet, but don't leave them to the final days.
Set the start date for your possession day, and the end date at your old place for one day after you move — if anything runs late, you'll be glad the lights are still on.
In Barrie, confirm which hydro provider serves your exact address; it's either Alectra or InnPower depending on location. Setting up utilities in Barrie covers it.
Time off work: as early as you can
Especially around month-end and in summer, when colleagues are booking the same days.
Take the day after your move as well, if you can. Almost nobody regrets it.
Help from friends: 2–3 weeks, confirmed twice
People genuinely want to help, and people genuinely forget.
Ask two to three weeks out, confirm a week before, and confirm again the day before.
Charity pickups: 1–2 weeks
If you're donating furniture or large items, collection services often need a week or more's notice — and longer at month-end.
Book this before you start packing, so donations leave the house rather than getting moved by default.
The two that catch people out
Internet, because nobody expects a month.
The service elevator, because it can stop a move entirely and it's usually discovered late.
If you do nothing else the day your date is confirmed, sort those two.
The booking order
- The day your date is firm: movers or truck, internet, elevator
- 4 weeks out: totes, storage, cleaners, charity pickups, time off
- 2–3 weeks out: utilities, help from friends
- 1 week out: confirm everything, in writing
