Garbage, Recycling & Organics in Barrie: How It Actually Works

The short version

  • Organics — weekly, City of Barrie
  • Garbage — every other week, City of Barrie
  • Yard waste — every other week April–November, City of Barrie
  • Recycling — check separately; run by Circular Materials, not the City

Everything below is the detail that matters.

Find your collection day first

Your schedule depends on your specific address — not your street, and definitely not your neighbour two blocks over.

Three ways to find it:

  1. Look it up online on the City of Barrie's collection schedule page
  2. Call Service Barrie at 705-726-4242, Monday to Friday, 8am–5pm, and staff will look it up
  3. Use the City's collection app, which will also send reminders

Do this in your first week. Put the schedule into your phone as a recurring reminder and you'll never think about it again. Households that don't tend to spend two weeks with a full garbage cart at some point.

Organics: weekly

Your organics cart is collected every week, and it holds more than most people realise.

Barrie's organics cart is 120 litres and comes with a gravity lock that keeps wildlife out — it opens automatically when the cart is tipped into the truck.

What goes in includes the obvious food waste, plus several things people don't expect:

  • Pet waste — dog waste, plant-based kitty litter, and bedding from small animals, using certified compostable bags
  • Soiled paper and paper towel
  • Food-soiled cardboard, like a greasy pizza box

Using organics properly is the easiest way to manage a biweekly garbage cycle. The bulk of what makes garbage smell is food waste — and food waste is collected weekly. Get that right and a fortnight between garbage pickups stops being a problem.

Garbage: every other week

For most residential properties outside the Downtown BIA, garbage is collected every other week.

The standard cart is 240 litres, with a 120-litre option available through the City's cart exchange if you produce less.

Carts belong to the City and stay with the property when you move. Don't take them, and don't expect the previous owner to have left extras.

Set out by 7:00 a.m. on your collection day.

Extra bags beyond your cart limit need a City of Barrie garbage tag affixed to each one. Tags are sold at various locations around the city.

Missing a garbage week is a two-week mistake. It's the single most common Barrie waste complaint, and it's entirely preventable with a phone reminder.

Recycling: not run by the City

This is the part that catches everyone.

Residential recycling in Barrie is not managed by the City of Barrie. Under Ontario's Blue Box Regulation, it's the responsibility of Circular Materials, a provincial producer organisation. Their collection contractor in Barrie is Emterra.

What this means practically:

  • Different website: CircularMaterials.ca/barrie
  • Different schedule from your garbage and organics
  • Different phone numbers for problems

Who to call for what:

  • Missed recycling, what's accepted, replacement boxes → Emterra, 1-888-597-1541
  • General recycling questions or escalated issues → Circular Materials, 1-877-667-2626
  • Missed garbage, organics or yard waste, or damaged carts → the City's contractor, via the City's website

One genuinely good piece of news: as of January 2026, the list of materials accepted for recycling in Ontario expanded. If you've lived here a while and haven't checked recently, it's worth another look at CircularMaterials.ca/barrie — several things that used to go in the garbage now don't.

Yard waste: seasonal

Collected every other week from April through November, generally alternating with your garbage week.

The rules that matter:

  • No limit on the number of bags, containers or bundles during your collection week
  • Remove plastic bags — if material arrives in plastic, the bags must be taken off
  • Bundle branches with twine or other compostable string, in small bundles
  • Branches over 7cm (3 inches) in diameter are charged at the regular garbage rate
  • Store it dry outside your collection week, so bags don't become waterlogged and too heavy to lift

Barrie's yard waste becomes compost used in City parks and sold to residents at the landfill when available. In 2024 the landfill received over 7,600 tonnes of it.

If you live in the Downtown BIA

Your schedule is completely different, and this catches new downtown residents constantly.

  • Organics and garbage are both collected weekly, on Tuesdays and Fridays
  • Set out by 4:30 a.m., not 7:00 a.m.
  • Yard waste runs every other week on Tuesdays, from the first full week of April through November

If you're moving downtown, confirm whether your address falls inside the BIA boundary before assuming the standard schedule applies.

What doesn't get collected

Bulky items — furniture, appliances, construction and renovation waste — are not collected curbside. Your options:

  1. Take it to the Barrie landfill for a fee
  2. Donate it, if it's usable — see where to donate in Barrie and Simcoe County
  3. Wait for a Curbside Giveaway Day, which the City runs twice a year — residents put usable items at the curb for others to take

Lithium-ion batteries must never go curbside. Phone, drone, power tool and e-bike batteries are a serious fire hazard in collection trucks. Take them to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility at the landfill site.

The same applies to paint, solvents, fuel and chemicals.

Illegal dumping carries fines of up to $5,000 under Barrie's Waste Management By-law. The landfill fee is cheaper.

Holiday weeks

During holiday weeks, collection runs one day later than usual.

Put your cart out at your normal time anyway. Never skip a week assuming there's no collection — the truck is coming, just a day behind.

Multi-residential buildings

If you live in a building with six or more units, you're on a different schedule again — the Multi-Residential Collection Calendar. Ask your property manager or check the City's site.

The new-resident checklist

  • Look up your collection day by exact address
  • Put it in your phone as a recurring reminder
  • Check CircularMaterials.ca/barrie separately for recycling
  • Confirm whether you're inside the Downtown BIA
  • Note that carts belong to the property, not to you
  • Find the Household Hazardous Waste Facility location for batteries and chemicals
  • Set out by 7:00 a.m. (4:30 a.m. downtown)
  • Remember: holiday weeks run one day later

The one thing to remember

Organics weekly, garbage biweekly, recycling separately through Circular Materials.

If you get only that much, plus your address-specific collection day in your phone, you've solved the thing that frustrates most new Barrie residents in their first month.
